2019 – 2020
7th Grade Math Mr. Ryan Ashley Jones Instructor of Young Minds Welcome to your7th Grade Open Up Resources Math Classroom! This year we will study the following subject in the order listed: Scale Drawings; Proportional Relationships; Measuring Circles; Proportional Relationships and Percentages; Rational Number Arithmetic; Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities; Angles, Triangles, and Prisms; Probability and Sampling; Putting it ALL together. Together we will explore each unit, learn what each of these units mean, and have lots of opportunities to learn from each other about the materials within the units. There will be lots of time to ask questions, and I promise to do everything I can to ensure you gain the best understanding possible of the materials we are covering within your mathematics classroom. As the facilitator, I will be focusing a lot of the class time on building student relationships and letting students learn together. I will facilitate learning throughout each lesson, and step in and give clear, guided instructions and notes. However, my main goal is to allow the students to learn to think their way through the questions and grow together as a class. I plan on achieving this through the use of note-taking skills and organizational skills. I will spend time showing each class how to take effective notes, as well as instructing them in the effective use of their notes for maximum benefit in learning. These two skills will help prepare students for their future success in 8thgrade, high school, and beyond (college or career path). The materials students in this classroom will need are as follows: 1)A dedicated notebook that can be left in the classroom 2)Color pencils or Color Pens 3)Mechanical Pencil(s) and Lead or #2 Wooden Pencils I will provide rulers, protractors, graph paper, sticky notes, index cards, and various other items, as needed. Calculators are on the student iPads, and this year the calculator for the End of Grade testing will be on the iPad as well. Therefore I see no need to have anyone purchase a calculator when we have the technology readily available for everyone, as is. I do not assign homework. However, there are always assignments which can be completed for extra credit which I will post in google classroom as “homework” assignments. I will also provide links with helpful information should any assistance be needed during the attempts on these problems. If you should have any questions / concerns / comments throughout the year, I can be reached in the following ways: [email protected] [email protected] https://rjonesmath.weebly.com/contact-me.html Or, by calling the school at (252) 514 – 6488, ask for Mr. Ryan Jones, or ask to be connected to room #602 Lastly, Guardians / Parents / Care-Takers: If you need to access the Open Up Resources Mathematics documents, there are family documents available for download at the following website: https://access.openupresources.org/curricula/our6-8math/en/ccss/grade-7/family.html# Together, we are going to have a wonderful year and I look forward to working with and getting to know each and everyone one of you! I graduated from East Carolina University (Go Pirates!) during the summer of 2011 with a B.S. in Mathematics, concentration Mathematics, and a minor in English. I love everything math, enjoy reading (novels and poetry), and write poetry when the urge strikes me. I am looking forward to great things from the many great students here at WCMS!
